I have been doing Yoga for over 20 years. I started doing yoga by
watching Lilias on television 20 years ago. I would have never imagined
that I would later go on to train with Lilias several times in person!
I went on to study yoga with Maggie McLain at The Treehouse in Tampa and
drove to Tampa because there were no studios in the Brandon area. Maggie
convinced me that I would be a good yoga teacher and I entered in to the
yoga teacher training program.
One day, a studio opened up 4 miles from my house and the owner and
teacher was a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher. I had never heard of
Kripalu yoga but from day one, I knew that this was the type of yoga
that I wanted to do. The only problem was that the Kripalu center was
located in Lenox, Mass. and I was located in Brandon, Florida!
I was honored when the owner of the studio in Brandon, Shirley Smith
asked me if I would like to teach at her studio. I started out by
teaching a “chair” yoga class but after a few months, the students were
out of the chairs and in to a regular class and people of all ages
joined in.
My love of Kripalu Yoga grew and I decided to find a way to go to the
teacher training program in Lenox Massachusetts. This was no easy task
as I was a busy Realtor at the time. I finished my teacher training and
have gone back to Kripalu many times for add ional teacher training. I
also take a group of students to Kripalu every year in April or May and
every year the number grows!
Sadly, Shirley had to close her studio and I went on to rent space along
with other yoga teachers in the area at a local church. I was a part of
Brandon Yoga for two years before deciding to build my own studio which
would be called Sacred Space Studio.
I built a beautiful space with hard wood floors surrounded by butterfly
gardens and it truly is a Sacred Space. My garden was featured in an
article by Monica Brandes in the Brandon News in February 2008. My
husband designed a logo for me using my initials SS (and also the
studios initials too.)
I am a certified Kripalu teacher and have studied with Lilias, Karin
Stephan, Amrit Desai, and Monica Voss and many others. I also attended
Bobbie Golden’s teacher training in Miami and received a certification
from Bobbie. Bobbie is a certified Iyengar teacher and I learned a lot
from Bobbie about the use of props which enable students to go deeper in
to the poses.
I truly enjoy teaching yoga and sharing this wonderful practice with
others. I offer a fun class which is light hearted and non-competitive.
